Mr. Harbor comes up behind us. “A whole extra hour?” he asks me.

I nod.

Mr. Harbor makes a face. I can’t tell if it’s an “Oh that sneaky Mrs. Hamilton” face or a “Why didn’t I think of that?” face? But either way, I can tell his brain wheels are turning.

“Listening to someone else read counts toward hours, right?” he says. “I can read to you from my own collection this morning.”

We cheer.

“That gives our class an extra twenty-two hours!” Matteo says.

“And why don’t I see if we can get time in the library today?” Mr. Harbor adds, winking. “Then we will have available books and we can add some reading hours.” He writes a note to Mr. Lucas, the librarian, and asks David to deliver it for him.

We try to settle down during Morning Meeting, but focusing is nearly impossible. Fortunately, David returns quickly.

“Mr. Lucas says he can give us twenty minutes right after lunch.”

Only twenty minutes? The class groans. David grabs a pencil from his desk, turns over the slip of paper in his hand, and calculates. “But that still adds up to an additional seven-point-three hours for our total!” he tells us.

Suddenly winning the read-a-thon is all any of us can think about. “Mr. Harbor, can you read to us for two whole hours today?” Piper asks.

I think for a moment, then raise my hand.

Mr. Harbor gives me a nod.
